What is an ATS, and why does it reject good resumes?
An applicant tracking system, or ATS, is software that companies use to collect, sort, and filter resumes before a human ever sees them. Most mid-size and large employers use one. When you submit a resume through a job posting, it usually lands in an ATS first, not directly on a recruiter's desk.
The problem is that a strong candidate can get filtered out for reasons that have nothing to do with their qualifications. A resume built with tables, columns, or graphics can lose information when the ATS parses it. A section labeled "Where I've Made an Impact" instead of "Work Experience" can get miscategorized or dropped. Missing keywords the job posting expects, even when you have the actual skill, can quietly lower your match score.
